Art has always influenced fashion, but lately it feels like fashion is really embracing it in a bigger way. What people wear isn’t just about looking good anymore it’s also about showing personality, creativity, and sometimes even making a statement. You can see this in everything from graphic prints to hand-painted jackets and sneakers that look more like something you’d see in a gallery than on the street.
A great example of art in fashion is the collaboration between Supreme and contemporary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Basquiat was known for his graffiti inspired paintings that mixed text, symbols, and bold colors. His work originally came from the street art scene in New York during the late 1970s and 1980s.
When Supreme used Basquiat’s artwork on things like jackets, button up shirts, and hoodies, it basically turned those clothing pieces into wearable art. Instead of a normal pattern or logo, the clothes featured his crowns, handwritten phrases, and raw looking brush strokes. Because of that, the pieces felt more expressive and unique than typical men’s fashion items.
This kind of collaboration shows how fashion and art can overlap. Someone wearing one of those pieces isn’t just wearing a brand, they are also representing an artist’s work and the culture behind it. It also makes fashion feel more creative because it brings artwork off the canvas and into everyday life.
Examples like this are a big reason why modern men’s fashion, especially in streetwear, often feels more artistic and experimental than it used to.
One of my favorite artists from the 80s.
